Soundless Valley is the sixth episode of the fifth season and the fifty-eighth episode overall of the Natsume Yuujinchou anime series. It first aired on November 8, 2016.

Summary

Natsume is saved from two hairy yokai who want his great and powerful Book of Friends by a bird yokai who mistakes him for his maternal grandmother Reiko. Unable to speak due to the spell the hairy yokai cast on him, Natsume and Nyanko-Sensei intend to have the casters return his voice, so that Natsume can continue returning names.

Plot

While out on an errand for Touko, Natsume is caught by two hairy-ball youkai, who influence him with dark energy and make him unable to speak. He is rescued by a bird-like youkai name Hidaka, who takes him to her 'nest' in an abandoned valley.

After a misunderstanding where Takashi is thought to be Reiko (once again!), Hidaka starts showing him around and wants to play with him. A few hours pass by before Madara arrives and takes him home.

Natsume explains losing his voice to the Fujiwaras under the pretense of having a cold.

Two days later, Hidaka appears to have her name back when they are ambushed by five hairy-ball youkai. Luckily, Madara frightens them, and they leave after returning Natsume's voice.

Natsume returns Hidaka's name and learns that Reiko had visited the valley when she was lost once and had played with Hidaka, who had waited for her return ever since.
