Hana (ハナ, Hana) is a minor character of Natsume's Book of Friends. She was the only human left worshiping Tsuyukami (God of Dew).

Appearance[]

Hana has the soft complexion of an elderly woman.

Personality[]

Not much is known about her but she seemed to be a kind, joyful, devoted, and determined individual, seeing as, despite her advanced age, she tries her best to reach Tsuyukami's shrine and continued to pray to until she could no longer do so.

She is also polite, smiles a lot, and speaks in happy manner.

History[]

Ever since she was in high school, Hana had been praying to Tsuyukami. One day, when she was at his shrine, he revealed himself to her and spoke to her. However, she didn't respond quickly enough before he disappeared. She always brought peaches to his shrine and hoped she would see him again.

Plot[]

She first appeared when her peaches dropped and Natsume helped her recover them. As a token of thanks, she offered a peach to Natsume. After she left, Nyanko-sensei mentioned that she doesn't smell appetizing, meaning that her death was near.

When meeting Natsume for the second time at the Tsuyukami shrine, Mrs. Hana tells Natsume that when she was younger, she believed she saw Tsuyukami sitting on the tree branch and that he was saying that the weather was nice. She regretted that she didn't reply since she believed that Tsuyukami would disappear if he was seen by people.

When she finally passed away, Tsuyukami followed suit and disappeared. The two then meet each other and this time, Hana replies to his comment about the weather.

Relationships[]

Tsuyukami[]

She speaks fondly of the god and since he is a youkai and thus, cannot see him, she is unaware that he had watched over all throughout her life. She was a devoted follower and would pray at his shrine very frequently. When she thought she saw him and heard him comment about the weather, she regretted not replying to him, which hints that she would have enjoyed being in his presence and interacted with him. After her passing, she is with him.

Trivia[]

  • In the anime, Hana's offering were oranges while in the manga, they were peaches. The changes were possible due to the seasons changing as well and in the case of the anime, to flow linearly to the timeline.
    • She also passes away in the summer instead of winter, respectively.
